Antonio Conte has expressed his delight at having Harry Kane at Tottenham Hotspur after Daniel Levy denied the striker a transfer away last summer, via quotes by football.london.
Kane wanted to leave north London after the 2020/21 season to strengthen his chances of winning European club titles. He also informed Levy of his position, per Sky Sports, having stayed an extra year after the Spurs Chairman and Jose Mourinho convinced him to stay.
The England captain’s preference was to remain in the Premier League and wanted to sort his future before Euro 2020. But the saga continued until August, when Kane tweeted his commitment to Tottenham after Levy rejected Manchester City’s £100m bid.
Kane won the Premier League Golden Boot with 23 goals and offered the most assists with 14 last season. But the 28-year-old has struggled to recapture that form this term with four goals and one assist after 17 games. Three of his goals have come in his last four outings.
Conte delighted to have Kane at Tottenham
Levy rejecting Manchester City’s pursuit of Kane’s transfer continues to delight Conte now he is Tottenham’s manager. The Italian monitored the 67-cap star’s situation this summer, and believes he must remain the figurehead of the Spurs frontline.
“I followed the situation, but now it is not right to look at the past,” Conte said. “Now, we have to live in the present, which says that Harry is a player at Tottenham and continues to be one of the best players in this team.
“He wants to give 100% in every game, and I am totally satisfied with his commitment and the relationship that we have created within the team. He is a point of reference in the dressing room and an experienced player.
“I am totally enthusiastic about his involvement in the team and the Tottenham project.”
Conte added: “I am happy to have him in my team because, for sure, we are talking about the top player, a top striker in the world. And if we want to win, or if we want to think to build something to win, Harry must be a point of start.”
Kane getting back to his best after goal spurt
Kane has rediscovered the form under Conte he lit up the Premier League with last term in Tottenham’s recent games. Even when he failed to score at Watford last Saturday, the 28-year-old was Spurs’ most lively attacker. He came close to netting multiple times, too.
He also linked Conte’s frontline well and will hope to net again at Chelsea in the Carabao Cup. Tottenham visit their London rivals on Wednesday night for their semi-final first-leg.
