The upcoming romantic drama movie ‘Radhe Shyam’ has sadly been delayed, but has a new release date been confirmed and will the film move to OTT streaming?
Whilst 2021 has been somewhat of a stop-start year for Indian cinema, it has still featured some incredible movies that are sure to become modern classics.

However, it appears that the ongoing coronavirus pandemic is continuing to plague Indian cinema, with a host of delays being announced this week.

Unfortunately, this includes the highly-anticipated romantic drama ‘Radhe Shyam’, but what date will the film now release and could it move directly to OTT streaming?

What is Radhe Shyam?

Radhe Shyam is an upcoming Indian movie produced by UV Creations and T-Series, directed by Radha Krishna Kumar.

Unfortunately, very few details on Radhe Shyam’s plot have yet been disclosed, with the movie being labelled as an epic period romance film set in Europe during the 1970s.

Whilst we may not know the exact narrative of the movie, fans should be excited for some high-quality set pieces and cinematography with a significant budget of Rs 350 Crore (around $46.7 million).

Principal filming started in October 2018, with the production team jetting off to Hyderabad, Georgia, and Italy before wrapping up in July 2021.

Interestingly, the movie was originally produced in both Telugu and Hindi languages simultaneously, with later confirmation that it will premiere in Tamil Kannada and Malayalam languages as well.

Radhe Shyam: Release date delayed

Radhe Shyam was originally scheduled to release in theatres in late-July 2021, but like so many cinema projects from around the world, had to be delayed because of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Lead actor Prabhas would then take to social media to share the official promotional poster for Radge Shyam, confirming that a new release date had been set for January 14th, 2022 – coining with the Sankranthi festival.

Unfortunately, on December 5th, it was officially confirmed that Radhe Shyam’s targeted release date had been pushed back once again, barring to the surge in Omicron cases.

Lead actor Pooja Hedge took to Twitter to share the official statement, explaining how “We have to postpone the release of our film #RadheShyam due to the ongoing covid situation.”

“We have been trying our best for the past few days but considering the growing cases of Omicron variant it looks like we will have to wait for our labour of love to get to the big screens.” – Pooja Hedge, via Twitter.

The actress ended the statement by stating the movie “is a story about love vs destiny and we are sure that your love will help us rise over these tough times together.”

Unfortunately, a new release date for Radhe Shyam was not shared by the production team.

Could Radhe Shyam now move directly to OTT streaming?

At the time of writing, there is no public information indicating that the international broadcasting rights have been acquired by any of the major streaming services.

However, the recent delay to the theatrical debut of Radhe Shyam could influence the production team’s decision about whether the film should now release directly for OTT streaming.

According to The Times of India, the team do want the film to release first in theatres “only as it contains appealing visual grandeur which can only be enjoyed fully on the big screens with supporting Dolby/DTS sound instead of watching it on mobiles and laptops.”

Whether the movie arrives first in theatres or online, fans can be hopeful that a major streaming platform will acquire Radhe Shyam over the next few weeks.

Not only is the film experiencing a high level of fan demand around the world, but T-Series have made a habit of striking big deals with the major platforms over the past year.

In fact, T-Series’ last five original productions have each landed on a major OTT service: Haseen Dillruba and Sardar Ka Grandson (Netflix), Sherni (Amazon Prime Video), Bhuj: Pride of India and Shiddat (Disney Hotstar).
