Meet Sandra Mae Frank

Sandra Mae Frank is an actor and producer with a number of credits to her professional name.

Her career began in 2013 with Beautiful Sounds of Love and the short, Harmony, in 2014. The actor then appeared as a receptionist in Switched at Brith.

Viewers will most likely recognize Frank from her role as Abigail in Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist, where she performed a unique edition of ‘Fight Song’ in American Sign Language.

Is Frank deaf in real life?

Yes, Sandra Mae Frank plays a deaf character in New Amsterdam and the actor is also deaf in real life.

As reported by Distractify, Frank starred in the 2015 Deaf West production of Spring Awakening, where she played Wendla Bergmann.

The musical was performed in English and American Sign Language and her performance awarded her three Tony Award nominees.

Frank conveyed her passion for more deaf actors to be represented on the screen to Master Chat Magazine:

“I’ve said it and I am going to say it again: deaf roles for deaf actors! I hope this will open more opportunities for deaf actors all over the world now that tons of casting directors have seen the show and seen that we are no different.”

Who does the actor play in New Amsterdam?

Frank plays Dr. Elizabeth Wilder in season 4 of New Amsterdam.

Dr. Wilder was eyed to be taking over Max’s position – after he decided to move to London with Helen (Freema Agyeman), but her current state of affairs could have the character put her career on hold while she looks after her brother who has schizophrenia.

Showrunner, David Schulner, described Dr. Wilder’s character to TV Line:

“Young, talented and self-assured, Dr. Wilder is one of the few deaf surgeons in New York City. She’s also one of the best surgeons, period.”

“But when Max tries to lure her to New Amsterdam, she refuses to join his team. Many times, in fact. In high demand all over the country, what’s it going to take to get Dr. Wilder to practice at this fabled hospital? And who is she replacing? These are just a few of the questions that will be answered in the season premiere.”
