Don Hutchison has stated that he would be ‘stunned’ if Romelu Lukaku doesn’t start for Chelsea against Tottenham at Stamford Bridge, as he told BBC Radio 5 Live Sport.

Tottenham will travel across London to take on their bitter rivals in a mouthwatering EFL Cup first-leg semi-final showdown.

The build-up to the game has been dominated by the drama surrounding Lukaku and an interview he did with Sky Italia that landed him in hot water.

Thomas Tuchel dropped him for Chelsea’s 2-2 draw against Liverpool at the weekend, but the player has since apologised for his actions.

Given that apology, Hutchison expects him to start tonight and thinks he has a chance to ‘prove it’ against his former manager, Antonio Conte.

“He has been brave enough to come on TV and apologise to the fans,” said Hutchison. “And Thomas Tuchel will take that.

“They have got the game against Tottenham and he will use it, I imagine. I would be stunned if he doesn’t start him.

“I think it’s the perfect game for Thomas Tuchel to say to Lukaku ‘go on and then, especially against your former manager. Prove it.’.”

It’s going to be interesting to see how all of this pans out tonight and whether it works in Chelsea’s favour.

On one hand, their fans will be hoping Lukaku is like a caged lion hoping to throw all his frustration, anger and goalscoring qualities out on Spurs.

If that’s the case, then Conte’s men will be in for a huge challenge and the Italian is well aware of what the Belgian hitman is capable of.

It was Conte who helped pick Lukaku up from the canvas and revive his career when he moved to Inter and it’s the reason why he got a big-money move to Chelsea in the summer.
