Sarina Wiegman sworn England Women would ‘stay grounded’ after beating defending champions Netherlands 5-1 in their penultimate warm-up game ahead of the European Championship on home soil next month.
The Lionesses came from behind to claim the eye-catching victory at Elland Road, their 11th win in 13 matches unbeaten under Wiegman.
The Dutchwoman, who guided the Netherlands to Euro 2017 glory and the 2019 World Cup final before becoming England boss last September, said when asked if her team were seen as favorites to lift the trophy this summer: “I think there are a lot of favorites for this tournament and we are one of them.
“But we know where we want to go and we stick to our strategy and our plans, and whether we lose or win now, we’re not going to sit down all of a sudden, we call it, on cloud nine. pink. We remain anchored.
“Even though we lost today, we still know what we can improve, what we do well and we want to take the next step in our style of play.
“Of course the expectation will go higher, but now it’s a moment. I think we are well placed, but we still have to improve some things, and we know that.
After the first half had seen Lucia Bronze canceling out Lieke Martens’ opener, England were let go seven minutes into the second half when Sherida Spitse, in her 200th appearance for the Netherlands, kicked a penalty past a post and wide.

It gives confidence because we know that we have a lot of depth in our team, a lot of quality. I have a tough choice to make for the first XI

A minute later, Beth Mead put the hosts ahead with a close-range finish, fellow substitutes Ella Toone and Lauren Hemp then added effort in the 72nd and 74th minutes, and Mead then scored her second goal late to wrap it up.
Wiegman said: “I thought it was a really good game. We struggled in the first half, I think the Netherlands played very well and we didn’t play to our strengths, we were struggling, and I think we played a really good second half time.
“It gives confidence because we know we have a lot of depth in our team, a lot of quality. I have a tough choice to make for the first XI.

“It was a good learning moment for us (in the first half), that we were behind. We haven’t been late since I arrived, so it was good to see the team’s reaction. Even when we were struggling, we were on it and able to take the game to the level we should be able to play.

England will play the final of their three warm-up matches against Switzerland in Zurich next week before facing Austria at Old Trafford in the Euro opener on July 6.
Following last week’s 3-0 win over Belgium at Molineux, Wiegman said there needed to be “more cruelty” at the summer tournament.
When asked how she felt about the cruelty against the Netherlands, Wiegman said: “Very happy.
“We talked about we need to be more ruthless, but I think tonight we scored the goals, we were really on it, and that’s really nice to see.”
Wiegman’s successor in charge of the Netherlands, England’s Mark Parsons, said England were the favorites for the Euros and also said he had ‘let down’ his side in the second half.

Parsons said: “When the (final) whistle sounded I knew I was going to analyze a shorter game, with 60 minutes.
“There would be no point in looking any further because I let them down. At that time the organization should have been much safer, more defensive, because the legs were gone and England were getting more and more fresh with its changes, with the local public.
“I think England will be favorites at the Euros, where they are, the quality of the players, the home crowd, the resources the WSL have invested, the work the clubs have done. You add it all up and it’s very difficult to see that they are not favourites.
